Hatchlings

Hudson and I have started volunteering for the Hawaii Wildlife Fund with the Honus.
I surf and say good morning to them daily. They have a special place in my heart. What better way than to get involved in the organization that does. We are happy to be a part of it.

We are doing dawn patrol and nest watches at our daily morning beach and were invited to watch the excavation of the nest when it was past time for the hatchlings to emerge.

What a special time!! They are so cute and so fragile, so grateful for this
organization to help the species survive. 1 in 1,000 green sea turtles will make it to maturity!!! 1 in 5,000 of hawksbills. No wonder they are endangered!!!

Time to dig to find the hatchlings.

They were trapped.

They dig them out.

Count and place in the bucket.

So tiny.

43.

There is the sun.

Counting the eggs to be sure they were all recovered.

Yep count matches. 1 didn't' make it to full development.

Time to let them go. They spend their first 24-48 hours swimming to see.

How deep the nest is.

They will not return to land for their first 10-20 years!

Much respect for these guys.

We see green sea turtles daily and hope to see the hawksbill someday.
