Curriculum

This was all our curriculum for the year. Mid year I reviewed it to be sure we were going to complete it all before the summer and simplified it into one binder versus the many books we had. Looking back, I was so overwhelmed with curriculum (still am) but now know simple!! For me and for the boys. This year we will be trying a different method for curriculum of having one giant book that contains all the subjects. Then, moving on to another book with the same and supplementing here and there with lessons from other books. I have learned throughout the year how to motivate the boys, myself, keep us all focused and on task to get our priorities done. I have had to realize everyday is a work in progress and it is going to change from week to week and maybe circle back. At first I struggled with this and now am realizing that this is just the nature of the job...where I get to be creative, motivating, organized, planning, and routine.

2019-2020 Curriculum

Curriculum:

• Read - book aloud to the child, child reads chapter in their book of choice & audible
• Lang &List, History/Geo, Science, Math - Read lesson from the What Your Grader Needs to Know Book for the subject & support lesson with lessons from a workbook & activities for the subject listed below for 20 min

Language & Lit:

• Phonics Workbook for grade, Spectrum 
• Reading Skills Workbook for grade, Flash Kids
• Reading Comprehension Workbook for grade, Flash Kids

• Lessons in Building Spelling Skills Workbook for grade, Evan Moor
• Lessons in Spelling Workbook for grade, Spectrum

• Lessons in Language Fundamentals Workbook for grade, Evan Moor
• Lesson in Writing Skills Workbook for grade, Flash Kids
• Lesson in Cursive and Handwriting, Spectrum
• Narration/Dictation - ask, write, they copy or write about chapter or they copy we say
• Creative Writing, Journal or writing stories

Math:

• Lesson in Math Skills Workbook for grade, Flash Kids
• Lesson in Basic Math Skills Workbook for grade, Evan Moor
• Lesson in Math Fundamentals Workbook for grade, Evan Moor
• Other - Math Storybook from library, Math Project, Smarttick Math Game, Math Facts

History:

• Read a chapter in Story of the world, biography or history book 
• Do an activity on details from the chapter - narration, draw pictures, map work, dictation then review 1 x month and during year
• Memory Work - memorize rulers, wars, major discoveries, Declaration of Independence, 1st 12 presidents of US from time period studying
• Other - documentaries, online videos, stories, interviews

Science:

• Daily Science workbook for grade, Evan Moor
• Read science books on Earth Science, Astronomy, Animal Kingdom, Human Body 
• Do an activity/project on details - dictation, narration, ask why 

Specials:

• PE & Sports: Ramp sliding, biking, crossbodies/workout, park, hiking, Surf, BJJ, diving, swimming, windsurfing
• Volunteer at Maui Humane Society, Library, Outschool class,Typing, Grader Needs to Know Art and Music Lesson
• Piano App, Dulingo, Research Projects
